Status of App State’s fraternities and sororities (2024)

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University has released a status report of its fraternities and sororities as of late fall 2020. The university has nine recognized women’s fraternities and sororities in its Panhellenic Council, seven recognized chapters in its National Pan-Hellenic Council and 14 recognized organizations in its Interfraternity Council.

App State has hosted fraternities and sororities for more than 40 years. More than 2,000 students currently hold membership in these organizations, which value service, scholarship, friendship and leadership.

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in the Division of Student Affairs works with the organizations on students’ holistic development and success, the cultivation of inclusive spaces and communities, and the fostering of meaningful relationships and lifelong learning.

Panhellenic Council women’s fraternities and sororities

Currently recognized fraternities and sororities within App State’s Panhellenic Council:

  • Alpha Delta Pi.
  • Alpha Omicron Pi.
  • Alpha Phi.
  • Alpha Gamma Delta.
  • Chi Omega.
  • Delta Zeta.
  • Kappa Delta.
  • Sigma Kappa.
  • Zeta Tau Alpha.

All of these organizations are in good standing with App State and the organizations’ national offices.

Recognized National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations

Currently recognized fraternities within App State’s Interfraternity Council that are under sanctions and/or investigation with App State and/or the organizations’ national offices:

  • Delta Chi — University probation and social restriction through Aug. 31, 2021, due to an unregistered party and violation of North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s executive orders on maximum capacity for gatherings due to COVID-19. Sanctioned Oct. 23.
  • Sigma Nu — University social restriction in place through March 14, 2021, due to an unregistered party and violation of Cooper’s executive orders on maximum capacity for gatherings due to COVID-19. Sanctioned Nov. 6.
  • Delta Sigma Phi — University social restriction in place through Jan. 31, 2021, due to an unregistered party. Sanctioned Nov. 6.
  • Sigma Alpha Epsilon — Under investigation by SAE National Office as of Dec. 2 regarding allegations of an unregistered party.

App State no longer recognizes Pi Kappa Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Kappa Tau, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities.
